Hope Ewing, author of Movers & Shakers: Women Making Waves in Spirits, Beer and Wine, moderates a panel of distillers and experts on how distilled spirits have been used to commune with the muse, the dead, and the divine. Participating are Shannon Mustipher, author of Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails; Niki Nakazawa, mezcal evangelist and founding partner of the Oaxaca-based agave spirits brand NETA; and Morgan MacLachlan, Master Distiller and Co-Founder of AMASS in Los Angeles.

Currently, we are unable to accept proof of a negative test or grant exemptions.

2. Photo ID AND
3. One of the following:
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) vaccination card (original) or other original certificate issued by a government health service that includes your full name, vaccine product name, and dates administered OR
- Digital COVID-19 vaccine record with QR code OR
- Digital image of the front of your original vaccine card that includes your full name, vaccine product name, and dates administered
Alternatives to carrying an original document:
- The California Department of Health lets you request a digital copy of your vaccine record. Pharmacies, health care providers, and many others participate in the Smart Health Card standard, which allows you to download a digital version of your record to your phone.
- Another provider-agnostic service, VaxYes, will verify your COVID-19 vaccine records and give you a free digital vaccine card for your phone's wallet. Visit the Los Angeles County Department of Health website for more information on COVID-19 vaccination records.

Speaker - A Night with the Living Dead: Dickens, Poe, and the Grip of the Past
“At the center of my research is the question of how literary form shapes our experience of time and natural systems,” said Griffiths, associate professor of English and comparative literature at USC. “I study 19th-century literature and science, the environmental humanities, and the history of comparatism. My work on these topics has appeared in such journals as Critical Inquiry, ELH, Studies in English Literature, Victorian Studies, Victorian Literature and Culture, and Book History. My first book, The Age of Analogy: Science and Literature Between the Darwins [Johns Hopkins University Press, 2016], examines how historical novels established a new relational understanding of history and furnished a new comparative method, shaping the disciplinary formations of both the life sciences and the humanities. It was shortlisted for the British Society of Literature and Science’s book prize and was runner-up for the first book prize of the British Association for Romantic Studies.”

A writer, entrepreneur, spirits enthusiast, and self-proclaimed service industry “lifer,” Ewing has been working with and writing about beer, wine, spirits, and sake for more than a decade. Originally from western New York state, Ewing spent 10 years in New York City raising funds for arts organizations before receiving her Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Columbia University. In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles, where she came into passion for craft spirits and cocktails through LA’s world-class food and drink scene. She is the author of Movers & Shakers: Women Making Waves in Spirits, Beer, and Wine (Unnamed Press, 2018), and she has written pieces for PUNCH, SevenFifty Daily, and Serious Eats on the intersections of alcohol and culture. Ewing is the co-founder and recipe developer for Vervet, a premium sparkling canned cocktail brand that celebrates the global cultures of LA and the cocktail revolution.

Panelist - Spirited Away: Distilled Spirits as a Link to the World Beyond
A master distiller and chief product officer at AMASS, McLachlan grew up in Vancouver, hiking in the forest and establishing what would become a lifelong relationship with plants. When she moved to Los Angeles, she became equally interested in the local flora and in distilling spirits from Southern California botanicals, which led her to distill the first gin and vodka from local clementines. McLachlan has helped build seven beverage brands, establishing herself as one of the leading independent distillers, as well as one of the only women distillers. AMASS celebrates the power that drink has to bring people of all walks of life together, inspired by the natural terroir and diverse cultural landscape of LA. McLachlan has added botanical personal care products to AMASS' lines as part of her desire to provide products designed for moments of celebration and self-care. "The thing that drew me to distilling in the first place [was] transforming botanicals into a conduit for ritual and connection," she said.

Mustipher is a cocktail consultant, spirits educator, and author of Tiki: Modern Tropical Cocktails (Rizzoli/Universe, 2019). She also founded Women Who Tiki, an organization that gathers a team of women bartenders to share their talents and collaborate on creating a one-night-only tropical cocktail–centric pop-up experience. In 2020, she received the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s Pioneer Award and was inducted into the Dame Hall of Fame. In 2021, she was No. 92 on Drinks International’s Bar World 100, which recognized her influence within the industry and for being the first Black American bartender to publish a cocktail recipe book in more than a century. Mustipher’s writing, cocktail recipes, and unique perspective have been featured in a number of publications, including VinePair, Saveur, Imbibe, GQ, the New York Times, Liquor.com, and more. She currently resides in Brooklyn and enjoys traveling, cooking, and collecting too many books.

As a producer, cook, and writer/translator/editor, Nakazawa has explored food, art, design, music, and film. She moved to Mexico City from Chicago in 2007. In 2012, she co-founded the experimental pop-up restaurant and catering company Pichón. When Nakazawa crossed paths with Max Rosenstock, he introduced her to the incredibly diverse and wild world of mezcal, then invited her to be a founding partner of NETA, which commercializes exemplary agave spirits from the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, Mexico. Nakazawa has applied her deep knowledge and love for Mexican history, cuisine, and mezcal to consulting on food and beverage programs and documentary film projects. Nakazawa was born in North Carolina and raised in the Boston area. In 2007, she earned a Bachelor of Arts with honors in interdisciplinary studies in the humanities from the University of Chicago, where she explored the encounters between Mexican history, aesthetics, critical theory, and central European literature.
William Z. Wysock

In addition to presenting Nikola Tesla’s lightning machines, William Z. Wysock also gives educational demonstrations at Monrovia Unified’s public schools. His father, William C. Wysock, was an internationally renowned Tesla coil builder and one of the pioneers of modern Tesla coil design and construction. Wysock Sr.’s coils have been featured in movies and TV shows since the late 1970s and are still in use today. The elder Wysock’s company, Tesla Technology Research, installed large Tesla coil systems in museums and research centers worldwide.
