Join us for an exciting evening as we venture into the sublime and explore the exhibition “Science and the Sublime: A Masterpiece by Joseph Wright of Derby."
This new evening series features salon-style offerings including curator talks and scientific demonstrations, outdoor guided sketching sessions, theatrical presentations, live music, and wine and beer (available for purchase).

Melinda McCurdy, curator of British art, shares her insights on Joseph Wright of Derby’s monumental An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump (1768), one of the great masterpieces from the Age of Enlightenment.
Huntington Art Gallery
Joel Klein, Molina Curator for the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences, leads a scientific exploration demonstrating the use of the air pump, as seen in Joseph Wright of Derby’s painting (on view in the exhibition).

Artist Richard Scott leads an outdoor, guided drop-in sketching session with three still-life displays. Guests can practice drawing what they see, experimenting with light, shadow, and shape. (All materials provided.)
