California Ranches: Lands in Transition
Architect Marc Appleton, author of Ranches: Home on the Range in California, discusses the history of cattle ranching in California. Once a robust industry in the state, ranching is now a much diminished and challenged enterprise, says Appleton, and many ranchers are witnessing the passing of a way of life. As ranches fail, there is a renewed debate on how these lands might transition to other uses. Many fall prey to suburban sprawl, but others offer instructive alternatives. A book signing follows the talk. This lecture is presented by the California Garden & Landscape History Society.
