2:30 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
Attila Kapitany, a leading expert on Australian succulents, gives an illustrated talk about ant-plants—one of the most unusual types of succulents in the world. He will also highlight other succulent plants that grow in the same habitat, as well as some rare and unusual xerophytic succulent orchids. Also known as myrmecophytes, ant-plants are highly evolved succulents possessing structural adaptations that provide food and shelter for colonies of ants. The ants, in turn, contribute to this symbiotic relationship by aiding in pollination and seed dispersal, providing nutrients, and defending the plants against herbivores. A plant sale follows the talk.
