Botanical Watercolor: Summer’s Bounty

Seasonal fruits such as plums, cherries, peaches, and citrus will lend inspiration to students in this watercolor series taught by botanical artist Lisa Pompelli. Suitable for all skill levels; prior drawing experience recommended. A materials fee of $10 is payable to the instructor on the first day of class. Members: $275. Non-Members: $295. Flower Arranging: Roses

Inspired by The Huntington’s historic Rose Garden and June's bounty of blooms, the team from Flower Duet will teach two fun arrangement techniques—"gather, drop, and fill" and "bundle and place"—using roses and other flowers. Members: $75. Non-Members: $85.  Registration: 626-405-2128.





Taste of Art: Herb Garden

Whether in the courtyards of ancient Greece or the patios of contemporary homes, gardeners have long known the benefit of keeping herbs close at hand. Join art educator and chef Maite Gomez-Rejón for a stroll through the Huntington's Herb Garden to explore the history of herb garden design. Afterwards, participants will prepare and enjoy a summer meal using an array of freshly picked ingredients. Members: $75. Non-Members: $85. Registration: 626-405-2128.





Busy Bees and Butterflies

Can bees communicate with each other?  How do butterflies sip nectar from flowers? Young entomologists can explore the working world of insects in a natural science workshop with Punam Bhakta. Field observations in the Rose and Shakespeare gardens will be followed by “lab work” in the Teaching Greenhouse. Ages 7–12. Fee includes one accompanying adult. Members: $20. Non-Members: $25. Flower Arranging for Children: A Rose by Any Other Name

“A Clash of Empires” examines the causes, course, and consequences of the conflict through the eyes of its many participants, publicly displaying for the first time materials from the Huntington Library’s vast collections documenting this turning point in modern history.





Spinning, Weaving, and Dyeing

The centuries-old crafts of spinning, weaving, and dyeing with natural plant dyes will be demonstrated in a day-long event in the Herb Garden, where many plants traditionally used for tinting fabric can be found in the landscape. Knitters are invited to bring their needlework.  General admission.





Tai Chi Series

Learn tai chi in the tranquil setting of the gardens in this seven-week class led by instructor Kathy Zenju Chyan, suitable for beginning and intermediate students. Members: $150. Non-Members: $170. Registration: 626-405-2128.

In the 19th century—with the work of Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, Lewis Carroll, and others—children’s fairy tales and nursery rhymes began to be widely published, documenting what was originally a rich oral tradition across western cultures. “Child’s Play?” includes a selection of rare drawings as well as the books themselves. The first major exhibition of furniture and decorative art by the American craftsman and designer Charles Rohlfs, the show includes more than 40 pieces from 10 museums and several private collections to survey Rohlfs’ career as a furniture designer.
