Maurice Merlin and the American Scene, 1930–1947

Maurice Merlin studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1929 to 1931 addressing the social tensions that faced the city and the nation during the 1930s with images of strikes, unemployed workers, and Detroit’s African American community. This exhibition includes work of fellow Detroit-based artists with paintings, posters, and watercolors on loan from collections in Los Angeles and Detroit, and is the first museum exhibition devoted primarily to Merlin’s career.

Kit Wertz and Casey Schwartz of Flower Duet will teach students how to design eye-catching arrangements displayed in a clear vase lined with citrus slices. Fresh fruit or leafy greens? It’s a toss-up! Kids will beg for seconds when they learn the secret for adding sunny flavor to winter salad greens by mixing up their own fresh lemon-lime dressing. Two major figures in the world of roses will be the featured speakers at the annual Great Rosarians of the World lecture, an event that celebrates the men and women who have made significant contributions to the world of roses. Walter H. Lewis, senior botanist at Missouri Botanical Garden, is an expert on species roses; Malcolm Manners, chairman of horticultural science at Southern Florida College, is well known for his research on the rose mosaic virus and for promoting Old Garden Roses.
