Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden was established in 1912. It was a gift from Henry E. Huntington to his wife, Arabella, whom he wed in 1913. Arabella was skeptical about Southern California as a new home, and Henry hoped to appease her with an exotic pleasure garden in a fashionable Oriental motif. The garden features koi ponds, a moon bridge, temple bell, and a furnished Japanese house. Plants include flowering peach, apricot, and Formosan cherry trees that bloom in late winter and early spring. There is also a camellia collection and examples of Japanese maple and red pines, azaleas, and ginkgo trees.
