Preservation/Conservation
at The Huntington
The Huntington’s Preservation and Conservation Department is responsible for the stabilization and conservation treatment of rare books and manuscripts, and works of art on paper. Located in the Munger Research Center, the Avery Conservation Center houses a conservation lab for works on paper, parchment, and photographic materials; a book conservation lab; an exhibits design and preparation unit; and a digital imaging lab.
The Huntington has a long history of preservation and conservation which began in the 1920s with the construction of fire- and earthquake-proof rare book stacks and the establishment of a book bindery. Construction of the Avery Conservation Center in 1981 ushered in a new era of comprehensive preservation and conservation activity. Newly expanded lab spaces, located in the Munger Research Center, were built in 2004. The current program consists of an array of interrelated components which include:
- preventive and collections level conservation
- single item conservation treatment of rare and unique objects
- environmental control
- emergency preparedness
- exhibitions
- research and documentation
- education, training, and outreach
- digital imaging and media reformatting for preservation and access
