Conservation Internships at The Huntington

The following training opportunities are offered on a time-available basis:

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowship in Conservation

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funds an annual conservation research and training fellowship. The Mellon Foundation Fellowship in Conservation has been awarded at The Huntington each year since 1981. The fellowship, offered in the conservation of either books or works on paper, is for individuals who have a Bachelor’s degree and can demonstrate a commitment to working in conservation or a related field. The fellow will work with the Preservation Department’s Conservators, who will make use of The Huntington’s collections materials in providing instruction. Through training in materials analysis, conservation treatment techniques, and readings from the conservation literature, the fellow will advance their knowledge of the underlying principals of conservation, and the tools and techniques used in the conservation of library/museum collections materials. The term of the fellowship is flexible, but generally runs from three to twelve months. Mellon Fellows are encouraged to document their work and make a short presentation to Huntington staff upon completion of their fellowship term. Stipend amount: U.S. $ 5,000.

Introductory Internship

We occasionally offer unpaid summer internships to high school and college students who are interested in entering the field of conservation, but who lack prior conservation experience. Applicants for these internships must demonstrate a commitment to learning conservation skills and techniques.

Advanced Internship

We also accept interns who are in their third year of conservation graduate school, or who have substantial prior experience in paper conservation or bookbinding. These internships, which usually last from 8-10 months, involve focused instruction in advanced conservation techniques. Interns must secure their own funding.
