Working under the direction of the Advancement Operations and Membership Director, the Membership Services Supervisor is part of the Visitor Services and Membership external relations team.  Oversees and assists with on-site Membership marketing through outreach to visitors, membership sales, servicing members, development and implementation of strategies for an on-site membership marketing plan.  Supervises the Membership and Visitor Services Assistant Supervisors and Representatives.  This 32-hour per week position requires holiday, weekend, and weekday work.  Works with the Director in preparing and managing the area’s budget, annual projections, and reports on visitation trends.

Essential Functions:

Supervises the team in providing service through admission transactions with an emphasis on recruiting new members, and servicing current/lapsed and renewing members. Utilizes the benefit structure to promote upgrades and the stewardship of Members. Utilizes on-site strategies to boost Membership sales and renewals. Welcomes visitors to The Huntington and informs them about membership and membership benefits with the goal to convert visitors to members. Effectively interacts with visitors and members ensuring complaint resolution, answering questions, and orienting visitors through the property; Works with the team to create a positive guest experience at The Huntington through communication, hospitality, information, and servicing. Expedites the entry of members through the use of scanning, and proficiency on the database, Raiser’s Edge; Provides analysis and reporting of visitation trends, sales, promotions, and projections to the Membership and Operations Director. Coordinates and prepares materials for monthly meetings with the Membership and Operations Director; Upholds the financial protocols associated with opening and closing procedures.  Manages, balances, and accounts for reserve cash fund.   Oversees the daily cash handling, including accurate balancing, and reporting of funds and ticket stock with the staff.  Provides the Membership and Operations Director with daily accounting numbers for admissions and membership sales. Ensures cash registers, credit card terminals and printers, and other related equipment remain in good working order.  Works with the Assistant Supervisors to maintain needed supplies; Oversees a full on-site servicing center at the Admissions Windows, Membership Windows, and Membership Table in a neat and presentable fashion, stocks with all necessary tools for servicing visitors and members, and insures that current exhibition/event information is available. Oversees materials and brochures for the on-site Membership Window and the Membership table, seeing they are available to Members and Visitors.  Aids the traffic flow by managing the front and back Windows; Maintains a thorough understanding of all levels of membership and each level’s respective benefits. Upholds and sustains policies tied to membership benefits. Qualifications:

Under regular supervision, assists the director and hiring supervisors with the staff recruitment process.  Provides administrative support by entering data, preparing correspondence and communications, maintaining files and databases, etc.  Has frequent contact with staff throughout the organization and regular contact with vendors and staff of other organizations.  Reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Essential Functions:  

Coordinates the recruitment process; prepares staffing requisitions; posts open positions; updates job descriptions as appropriate; develops recruitment sources in coordination with hiring supervisors, places newspaper ads, posts openings with various recruiting agencies; updates website; In a timely manner: pre-screens prospective applicants; forwards application materials to hiring supervisors; completes reference checks;  processes background check for specified departments and positions that involve working with children; maintains applicant database; prepares and processes acknowledgement and turndown letters; prepares and distributes offer letters; closes recruitment files upon placement of successful candidate; Confirms Social Security numbers for new hires via on-line process. Obtains and reviews I-9 documentation and completes the required forms to ensure legal compliance; Creates new personnel files and enters new hire data and selected maintenance data into ADP Payroll, and HR Profile in a timely and accurate manner; Creates termination reports. Qualifications:

The Huntington Library invites applications for a temporary professional position in the Manuscripts Department processing and creating records for a manuscript collection related to the history of Chinese Americans in twentieth-century Southern California. This grant-sponsored position is funded through 30 June 2009; begins immediately.

 

Essential Functions:

Processes and creates other access tools (including finding aids and MARC records) for a manuscript collection related to the Chinese American experience in Southern California. Works under the general supervision of one of the Library’s Curators of Western American Historical Manuscripts.

Qualifications:

M.L.S. degree or M.A. in American History, or equivalent training and experience.  Must have familiarity with descriptive archival standards and procedures.   Basic computer literacy required, including familiarity with MS Office applications. Preferred:  Formal training or experience in a manuscripts or archival repository or special collections library.  Experience with FileMaker Pro database software and the suite of Microsoft Office applications.  Specific academic subject knowledge in the history of California is strongly desired, such as would be achieved with the completion of a B.A. in American history or American studies.  A background in ethnic studies, especially of the Chinese American experience, desirable, as is some reading knowledge of Chinese.

Under the supervision of the Director of Education, in close cooperation with the Director of the Art Collections, and in coordination with members of the Education staff, creates and implements new and existing art education programs.  Acts as art content and pedagogical specialist within the Education Department.  Develops, implements and evaluates training techniques, provides pedagogy and some content-based instruction for art docent programs.  Develops and evaluates art-based lesson plans and provides professional development for K-12 teachers.  Provides input including content for art workshops for children and adults.  Acts as interpretive specialist for art exhibit projects.  Explores and promotes collaborative association between the Huntington and other art educational organizations and school districts.  

 

Essential Functions:

In collaboration with the Volunteer Programs Manager, and in conjunction with the Art Collections, creates, implements, evaluates and advises on art docent training programs; In coordination with the School Programs Coordinator, develops and implements art education school programs, and develops lesson plans, teacher workshop activities, and classroom materials; Provides instruction and other professional development opportunities for classroom teachers; Advises Education staff on content and pedagogy for youth and continuing education programs; In collaboration with the Art Collections, assists in the development and implementation of interpretive strategies for art exhibits; May supervise the work of contractors, as well as part-time and full-time staff as needed; Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in art history, or art studio or related field.  Graduate degree or progress toward graduate degree in art history or art education, or the equivalent combination of experience and education; Knowledge of curriculum theory and design, teacher education, interpretive strategies and collections-based art education and pedagogy a must; Knowledge of California Visual and Performing Arts Standards; Demonstrated ability to create and implement a variety of collections-based art education programs that serve a broad audience, including docent training and teacher education; Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team essential; Strong organizational skills; Demonstrated ability to teach in a classroom situation highly desirable; Superior writing skills and oral communication skills essential. Position: Security Officer (5 Positions available)

Working under direct supervision, is assigned to work in galleries or gardens to protect visitors, collection and property.  Duties may include performing security patrols by foot, answering visitor inquiries, respond to emergencies according to defined procedures; and monitor movement of staff, visitors, assets, equipment and materials.

Security part-time positions consist of a 28-hour per week schedule, weekday work hours: 11:45 AM to 4:45 PM; and weekend work hours: 10:15 AM to 4:45 PM. Must be available to work weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

Essential Functions:

Patrols assigned areas to protect visitors, collections and property.  These areas may be regular or special posts; assignments may change daily and within a single shift; Observe, detect and report on damage to property as well as safety and or security hazards; Maintain a high level of customer service to staff and visitors; This position requires standing for long periods of time (up to 6 hours per shift) and wearing of a radio earpiece at normal volume setting; Greets visitors; provides information, direction and other assistance to ensure visitors have a positive experience; May be assigned outdoors and construction posts which may include inclement weather, dust, dirt and noise; Enforces Huntington and Security policies and regulations within guidelines provided, using good judgment and excellent public relations skills; refers unresolved concerns or problems to supervisor; Responds to alarms according to established guidelines.

Assists staff, visitors and others in the safe evacuation of buildings and other areas; Responds to incidents and emergencies according to Huntington policy – same for On-Call Security Officers; May be asked to administer first aid to staff or visitors; May be asked to perform security responsibilities for special events, construction activities, filming, and other special functions, at any hours of the day and during any days of the week; Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent; Able to understand and explain policies and procedures thoroughly and clearly; Able to speak and articulate clearly for radio and personal communication; Must be able to hear communications accurately over the radio and in person; Must be able to read written documentation, pamphlets, and computer screen; Able to see with clarity up to 75 feet; Sufficient mobility and strength to patrol assigned areas for up to 6 hours standing, and to assist others to evacuate buildings and other areas, including such activities as holding a heavy door open for several minutes at a time and climbing stairs; Able to exercise good judgment at all times; Have a high level of integrity; be tactful and courteous in dealing with visitors, staff, vendors, readers and others; Valid California driver’s license; Able to work a varied schedule which is subject to change. Position: Membership Assistant

The Membership Assistant supports all aspects of the membership program with the main focus on servicing and membership fulfillment, while working closely with the Membership Staff.  Oversees servicing members though all contact modes – phone, e-mail, and in person. Acts as the main membership receptionist responsible for managing heavy phones for the Membership department.  Oversees membership fulfillment, acknowledgement, and thank you letters when appropriate.  Assists with the maintenance of accurate donor/membership records, and creations and distribution of membership cards.  Provides support at events which may take place during evenings or weekend hours.  This position is responsible for membership relations and contributes to the overall growth of the Membership Program through servicing and prospect outreach.  Provides membership information to members, staff, volunteers, and the general public as appropriate.  Promotes membership sales whenever appropriate.  Reports to the Operations and Membership Director.

 

Essential Functions:

Member Relations and Servicing:  Provides outstanding member relations by answering membership phone calls in a pleasant manner and responds to all membership inquiries via phone, mail, fax, and e-mail in a timely manner; Emphasis on stewardship and excellent customer service is to be handled in professional manner at all times; Assists at member-related events; Supports all requests of membership information or general information; Is the backup for on-site Membership sales and servicing in the Membership Window, and works closely with the on-site Membership Sales Staff and Volunteers; Works directly with the Membership and Operations staff to solve member-related issues and problems. Membership Fulfillment and Database Management:  Responsible for the accurate recording of all new and renewing membership gift information utilizing the Raiser’s Edge database; Accurately produces prompt membership acknowledgements and membership cards via mail merge into Microsoft Word utilizing the Raiser’s Edge database within in 72 hours of receipt; Implements fulfillment of all membership benefits; Oversees incentives tied to membership fulfillment due to structured benefits or special appeals; Assists with data entry updates for address changes, biographical data, deceased records, etc. in a timely basis. Administrative Support: Answers all written requests for membership information and membership related questions; Oversees an up-to-date archival retrieval system for membership correspondence and gift transmittals; Oversees the membership fulfillment supply needs; Assists with moving and organizing boxes of supplies to appropriate areas; Works closely with the Membership Staff providing general clerical administrative support. Special Projects:  Special projects might include assistances with the development of annual appeals, upgrade appeals, prospect appeals, conducting a membership survey, development of new printed materials, etc. to achieve annual membership retention and growth; Assists in maintaining relationships with art museum membership colleagues in other cities plus local cultural and educational institutions with membership programs. Position: Curator of European Art

The position is one of two senior curatorships in the Art Collections, and four in the Huntington as a whole.  Working under the Director, the Curator of European Art is responsible for the care and development of the collections of European fine and decorative arts, their display and interpretation, and related public programs . The Curator has frequent contact with outside organizations at a senior level, is required from time to time to represent the Huntington in academic and professional forums, and may be asked to act on behalf of the Director in his absence. 

Essential Functions:  

Advises the Director of the Art Collections on all relevant aspects of the work of the division, and generally assists as required in the operation of the whole Division. Within field of expertise, carries out research and participates actively in scholarship, nationally and internationally, publishing as appropriate.  Represents the Huntington in the appropriate forums for the subject area; Maintains the quality of the permanent displays in the Huntington Gallery; proposes and organizes changing displays of light sensitive materials; Plans and initiates condition surveys and any necessary cleaning, conservation or repair of works of art; Advises on collecting strategy, researches and develops potential acquisitions, and makes appropriate presentations to Trustees, Overseers, Art Collectors' Council, and other supporters of the Huntington; Develops relations with private art collectors, helps and advises them on their collecting, with a view to future donations of important objects to the Huntington; Answers public and professional enquiries, drafts all labels and other material to support the display of the whole range of objects in the Huntington Gallery; Proposes and organizes temporary exhibitions, including loan exhibitions, in the MaryLou and George Boone Gallery; Supervises  Assistant Curator, curatorial fellows, interns and volunteers. May supervise the work of other staff as necessary; Organizes conferences and other academic events and participates in other scholarly activities relating to the work of the assigned Collection; Advises as appropriate on the selection of Huntington Fellows within the broad subject area and participates in events organized by the Research Division of the Huntington; Gives lectures and guided visits to the European Collections, and when required to the Art Collections as a whole, giving due emphasis to the history of the collection and the Founder's period of residence in the Huntington house; Gives appropriate assistance to the Communications, Special Events and other departments in support of public events at the Huntington; Works with the Education Department to arrange a variety of educational programs and to provide content for Docent training; Seeks in all ways to maximize the public profile and educational role of the collections; Works with the Vice President for Advancement’s staff to provide support in relation to individual donors, and in preparation of grant proposals to Foundations and government agencies; Within the budget set by the Director supervises expenditures in relation to the relevant collections, displays, exhibitions and other relevant activities; Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

PhD or other evidence of research and writing at a very high academic level; Expertise and publications in some aspect of European art, preferably British or French 18th century; An ability to represent the strengths of the collection in appropriate professional gatherings internationally; An energetic approach to the care and development of the collections, including knowledge of the international art market; An interest in historic architecture and the history of collecting; Ability to reach out to the volunteer leadership of the Huntington, and to develop support for the collections within the wider community; Administrative, project management and communication skills, and the ability to work well with colleagues; At least three years curatorial, managerial and other relevant experience.

 

 

Position: Project Conservator, Kemble Maritime Collection

Working as a member of the Conservation team within the Preservation Department, the Project Conservator is responsible for conserving designated materials from the Kemble Maritime Collection. Has contact with staff throughout the institution. Works under the direction of the Chief Preservation Officer. Works with the Curator of Rare Books and the Kemble Catalog Librarian. Reports to the Chief Preservation Officer.

Essential Functions:

The Project Conservator is responsible for the physical care, preservation, and performance of conservation treatments of designated works on paper and paintings in the Kemble Maritime Collections at The Huntington Library; The Project Conservator works to develop and carry out appropriate and expedient protocols and techniques for treating, documenting, examining, exhibiting, housing, and photographing these collections materials; The Project Conservator uses imaging, written documentation, and the in-house conservation treatment database to describe and archive records of conservation treatments for the collection; The Project Conservator maintains and orders supplies and equipment to care for the collection as needed; The Project Conservator may supervise and train interns or additional staff as needed; Maintains statistics for work completed; Participates in Preservation and Conservation departmental activities; Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree is required, with the Master’s degree plus certificate in Conservation from a recognized graduate conservation training program or a Bachelor’s degree plus a combination of equivalent formalized advanced training and experience in the conservation of library and museum materials; Skill in paper conservation treatments as demonstrated by a portfolio; Computer literacy, database, and research skills; Demonstrated knowledge of material science as it applies to library & museum materials and media; Strong knowledge of the history of printing; Excellent manual skills, attention to detail; A strong commitment to preserving the intrinsic value of the artifacts through the application of appropriate conservation techniques. Experience: Previous experience working in a library, museum, archives facility, or equivalent situation; An understanding of the theory and practical techniques of conservation and preservation of paper and art materials.
