A “New and Native” Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene & Greene
Oct. 18, 2008 - Jan. 26, 2009
  Boone Gallery

The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, in partnership with the Gamble House, USC, will present the most comprehensive exhibition ever undertaken on the work of Arts and Crafts movement legends Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene. “A ‘New and Native’ Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene & Greene” will be on view from Oct. 18, 2008, through Jan. 26, 2009, in the MaryLou and George Boone Gallery at The Huntington before traveling to the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C. (March 13–June 7, 2009) and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (July 14–Oct. 18, 2009).

The exhibition comprises some 200 works drawn from The Huntington’s collections as well as those of the Gamble House and more than 30 private and institutional lenders.

“A 'New and Native' Beauty: The Art and Craft of Greene & Greene" will cover the entire breadth and depth of the architectural and design careers of the brothers Greene, whose firm’s output of exquisitely crafted homes and furnishings in the early 20th century secured for them a defining legacy within the American Arts and Crafts movement. The exhibition will include furniture, decorative arts, architectural drawings, photographs, watercolors, and related materials, some of which have never been on public display.

The exhibition curators are Edward R. Bosley, the James N. Gamble Director of the Gamble House, and Anne E. Mallek, curator of the Gamble House. It was designed by Brenda Levin, Levin and Associates Architects. A major book with 10 scholarly essays will accompany the exhibition. More about the exhibition...
