Renowned conservationist will speak at
“Roots & Shoots” festival

Inspiring the young to help make the world a better place is a labor of love for Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE. So important is her work that she rarely takes a day off---even on her birthday.

The renowned primatologist, conservation activist, and U.N. Messenger of Peace will celebrate her birthday at The Huntington on Saturday, April 3, as guest speaker at a “Roots & Shoots” family festival. The day-long event is designed to increase young people’s awareness of their role as the Earth’s caretakers. At the same time, it celebrates the lifelong achievements of one of the world’s most outspoken environmental activists.

This is Dr. Goodall’s second visit to The Huntington; the first, in 2001, drew a crowd numbering in the thousands to hear her deeply moving and inspirational message.

Roots & Shoots, founded by the Jane Goodall Institute in 1991, is a worldwide program dedicated to empowering young people to take action for the environment, animals, and the human community. Member groups include schools, service clubs, youth groups, and community organizations in more than 80 countries. The festival provides local Roots & Shoots groups with an opportunity to exhibit their environmental projects to Goodall and the community, to be acknowledged for their active participation, and in turn to inspire others.

School children explore the world of nature up close at The Huntington.

The Huntington’s own commitment to education and conservation makes it a very fitting setting for this event. The 150-acre botanical gardens not only help preserve many endangered plant species, but also serve as a training ground for the caretakers of tomorrow through educational programs that introduce young people to the wonders of the natural world.

Festival activities will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. In addition to student exhibits, the program will include live animals, multicultural music and dance, international children’s art, craft activities, storytelling, and displays by local conservation groups such as TreePeople and Heal the Bay. Click here for complete program.

The highlight of the event will be an outdoor talk by Dr. Goodall at 2:00 on the lawn of the Australian Garden. Seating is festival style; no special tickets required. The lecture and all festival activities are included with Huntington admission. See Visitor Information

[NOTE: due to recent rains, the ground may be damp.  Visitors may want to bring a waterproof cloth or plastic sheet to sit on.  The program will go on, rain or shine.]
