Chinese New Year
Family Festival

Feb. 23, Saturday

11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Music, dance, and activities for children will celebrate the lunar new year as the Garden of Flowing Fragrance opens to the public.

The Chinese New Year is the most important of all Chinese holidays. It begins on the first day of the first month according to the lunar calendar, and the festivities continue for several weeks thereafter. The centerpiece of the Huntington festival will be a traditional Chinese flower market in the entrance pavilion, with colorful stalls of cut flowers and blooming plants for sale. A number of flowers have special New Year’s significance in Chinese culture, including plum blossoms (symbolizing the beginning of spring), peonies (prosperity), narcissus (longevity), and other blooms such as orchids, forsythia, camellias, and golden mums. Many of these will be offered at the event, subject to seasonal availability.

Other activities will include lion dancers and Tai Chi demonstrations, a reading and book signing by children’s author Oliver Chin, a performance by young musicians, folk dancers, and a Chinese music ensemble. Throughout the day, visitors young and old can enjoy Chinese crafts, workshops, and Chinese brush painting demonstrations.

All activities are included with general admission.
