The scenes that Moore's poem depicted naturally lent themselves to illustration. This facsimile of the 1869 edition of the poem boasts charming illustrations by an anonymous artist whose work perfectly captures the merry good humor of Moore's story. Thomas Nast (18401902), the best-known editorial cartoonist of nineteenth-century America, provided further images of Saint Nicholas as well. Eventually, Moore's character was developed into the Santa Claus that we are so familiar with today.
