About the Author:
Clement Clarke Moore (17791863) was the only son of Benjamin Moore, president of Columbia College and bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New York. Clement was educated in the classics by his father and went on to graduate from Columbia College at the head of his class, earning his M.A. degree there in 1801. A professor of Oriental and Greek literature at the General Theological Seminary in New York, he published biblical and historical studies including a Hebrew lexicon (1809) and a biography, George Castriot King of Albania (1850).
Moore married Catherine Elizabeth Taylor in 1813, and they settled at Chelsea, a country estate outside New York City. "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" (1822) was written as a Christmas gift for his children.
