Introduction to Resources for Teachers

Classroom teachers are a priority at The Huntington.  Our goal is to help them use The Huntington's extensive resources to augment and complement their classroom curriculum, and to meet local, state, and national academic standards in a variety of subjects.  We provide field trips, workshops, institutes, and online lesson plans and other materials, nearly all of which are offered free of charge.  Salary point credit is also made available whenever possible.

School Programs

The Huntington offers eleven different school programs free of charge.  These programs are held during non-public, morning hours and are led by volunteer docent teachers who guide the students in interactive explorations of The Huntington's treasures. Learn more about the school programs by following the links at left under Program Descriptions.  Schedule here.

Workshops / Open House

The Huntington is no longer offering summer teacher workshops. Instead, an Educator Open House in spring 2008 will provide teachers with the opportunity to explore The Huntington as our special guests. This exciting evening event will include special tours, keynote speakers, and hands-on workshops.

For 2007, teachers who have registered for a docent-led field trip will be invited to attend a Fall Teacher Workshop to help prepare your students for thier field trip.

Look for your invitations to these specail events in the mail or check back here.

Add your name to our educators mailing list and receive announcements about programs for teachers.

Lesson plans and online resources

The Huntington now provides more than 75 free lesson plans online to K-12 teachers. The lesson plans feature objects and documents from The Huntington's collections, are inquiry-based, and linked to various academic standards.

Other helpful resources accessible from our website include state and national frameworks in science, art, and history, and the new site ArtWonders.

Discover ArtWonders -

a New Way for Teachers and Students to Study Art

Art Wonders web siteArtWonders, an interactive web program designed to captivate and educate teachers and students K-6, explores new ways to wonder about art. Divided into two areas, ArtWondersTeachers features examples of historic landscapes, portraits, and decorative arts from The Huntington’s collections, supported by lessons plans, a forum for exchanging ideas, and information about scheduling school tours. In ArtWondersKids, children can click on these same examples while discovering clues to the artist’s possible inspirations and influences.  Visit ArtWonders

  • Grounding in Botany - funded by the National Scince Foundation and Arthur Vining Davis Foundations, this program builds botanical knowledge for use with Wisconsin Fast Plants lessons
  • Teaching American History -a Department of Education program to improve students' knowledge of American history
