Programs for Youth & Families

At The Huntington, kids and families learn from "the real thing," be it a personal letter in George Washington's own handwriting, a priceless 18th century cabinet with secret compartments, or a strange carnivorous plant that eats bugs. We offer one-day workshops, weekend festivals, weeklong day camps, and even overnight adventures for kids age three through high school and their families.

Family Workshops

Workshops are scheduled bi-monthly and allow youngsters an opportunity to learn from the experts and try their own hands at projects such as flower arranging, creating bonsai trees, planting succulent dish gardens, paper making, constructing a plant and flower press, bread making, or creating a terrarium. For more information, call (626) 405-2128.

See the Calendar for schedules.

Preschool Program

The Huntington offers four-week long-preschool programs throughout the year with a special focus on introducing young ones to some aspect of the Huntington's collections. Past themes have included the Japanese Garden, Art and Nature, and Alice and Wonderland. An upcoming class will feature the Desest Garden.

See the Calendar for schedules.

Family Festivals

Several times a year we offer special events related to our current exhibitions. Weekend festivals feature music, dance, crafts, demonstrations, and other activities.  Family Weekend programs are free with general admission, and no reservations are required. For more information, call (626) 405-2128.

See the Calendar for schedules.

Girl Scout Badges

Brownie Girl Scouts:

  • Watching Wildlife Try-It
  • Plants Try-it

Junior Girl Scouts:

  • Earth Connections Badge
  • Outdoor Creativity Badge
  • Plants and Animals Badge
  • Wildlife Badge
  • Science in Everyday Life Badge

How to proceed?  It's easy!  Once you have paid your admission, stop at the Information Booth.  For $5.00 per troop, purchase a packet on the Try-It or Badge you would like to complete.  Each packet contains a cover sheet with instructions, activity sheets for each girl and a sign off sheet.  Follow the instructions inside. Your girls have completed a project!  Be sure to have the sign off sheet signed by the Information Docent before leaving The Huntington.  (The Brownie Plants Try-It and Junior Outdoor Creativity and Plants & Animals Badges have additional requirements that must be completed outside of The Huntington.)  You may purchase your Try-Its or Badges at a Council store upon completion.

Discovery Carts

Discovery Carts can be found by the Lily Ponds, Desert Garden, and Japanese Garden every Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Hands-on activities for children ages three and up engage them in exploration of the nature and landscape of the gardens. Free with general admission, and no reservations are required. The Discovery Carts are made possible through the generosity of the Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation. For more information, call (626) 405-2128.
