My name is Li. I come from a place called Guongdong. Where is that? I'll show you. I am 14, and my father and I are tailors, which means we make clothes. My father and I work all day to make sure my grandmother, mother, and sisters have enough to eat.
We have heard that across the sea there is a mountain of gold in a place called California. My father and I want to go find some of that gold. We already spend part of each year working far from home in Hong Kong. Will it be so different to be across the sea? When we are rich we will send for the family, or we will come back to China with our bags full with gold.
What do we need to take for our journey?
Help us decide.
