Amorphophallus titanum: The Bloom

When it came time to bloom, the towering Titan behaved like a shy "shrinking violet," waiting until the gardens had closed for the day before starting to unfurl its petal-like spathe. That night was an exciting and busy one for botanical staff members and the media alike.

After nearly three weeks of being the museum's star attraction, the Amorphophallus titanum was returned to the greenhouse where botanists awaited the results of pollination. It was unknown when or if the plant will ever flower again, but signs looked favorable that its brief bloom would prove fruitful.
