This aeonium stands out among its relatives both literally and taxonomically.  Its ciliate leaf margins, among other features, distinguish it as a species but its statuesque habit distinguishes it in the landscape.  Individual rosettes to 30 cm across top bare 2.5 to 3.5 cm diameter stems to 2 m or more tall.  The stems are ashen and are ornamented with elegantly spiraled, dark brown, broadly wedge-shaped leaf scars surmounted by a small fissure in an arrangement reminiscent of candle flames.  Rooted cuts of HBG 81087, a plant collected Feb. 2, 1997, by N. Barboza (# 752) at Lomo de las Bodegas (910 m), in the Anaga Mtns. at the northern tip of Tenerife, Canary Islands.  $6.
