The genus Stenocactus is generally recognized by its numerous sinuous ribs, inspiring the common name of “brain cactus”, for S. multicostatus in particular, though the ribs of S. ochoterenanus are barely visible beneath the numerous white radial spines that set off the flattened dark-brown centrals that age to tan. Some magnificent habitat photos of this species may be found in Cactus & Co., IX(2): 89-103 (2005) as part of a lushly illustrated travelogue by Cristophe Blanchy of the Jardin Exotique in Monaco. Anderson notes in The Cactus Family (2001) that the distribution includes the states of Querétaro and Guanajuato. Blanchy notes that this may be extended to include Aguascalientes as well and the collection offered here extends it further to include San Luís Potosí.
