The Next Phase

Thanks to the generosity of hundreds of donors, The Huntington has received gifts totaling over $18 million to build Phase One of Liu Fang Yuan and to date another $9 million to fund and endow the Garden and its programs.

We continue to invite support, as we aim to fund the following:

PROGRAMS: seed funds and endowments for the scholarly, educational, and public programs that will bring the Garden to life.

ENDOWMENTS: current and planned gifts to form permanent named endowments for the operation and maintenance of the Garden.

CAPITAL: gifts and grants that will enable us to design and build the next phase of the Garden.

Working with our Suzhou partners, we are designing the next phase that will complete the lake side pavilions and add new areas for education and enjoyment. Our current plans include a celebration garden in the north, with pavilions embracing a large courtyard and the Flower Washing Brook, providing a place for family festivals and music. The boat-shaped pavilion in the west will be completed with carved wood facades and a three-tiered roof. The terraced west hillside will create a series of courtyards for penjing (Chinese bonsai) displayed in a rustic setting against stucco walls. And a pavilion perched on the hill above the southern shore will be both a place to look at and to look from as visitors enjoy a view across the lake to the mountains beyond. We will continue to work with our partners in China to provide the materials and the unique skills that will ensure the same high standards of authenticity and quality evident in Phase One. We want Liu Fang Yuan to be among the finest Chinese gardens in the world, and we hope you’ll support this extraordinary project.
