Local donor pledges support for Chinese Garden When Wilbur K. Woo, vice-chairman emeritus of Cathay Bank, and his son Michael attended a Chinese Garden tea party in September, he commented, “My only regret is that I didn’t come sooner.” Woo has since committed $250,000 to the project and is looking forward to the day when he can enjoy a cup of tea at the garden’s planned teahouse that will display a plaque to commemorate his family’s support. Born in Guangzhou, China, to a banking family, Woo helped to establish Cathay Bank and was also instrumental in the shaping of Chinatown in downtown Los Angeles.
